ベレーの歴史は古く、古代ギリシャやローマ時代の「ピレウス」と呼ばれる頭にぴったりした被り物が起源とされています。

現在の形になったのは15〜16世紀頃で、カトリックの聖職者が被っていた「ビレッタ」がフランスとスペイン国境近くのバスク地方に伝わり、農民の間で広まりました。

19世紀にはナポレオン3世が「バスク・ベレー」と呼んだことをきっかけに、世界中に普及しました。

20世紀初頭にはフランス軍のアルプス山岳部隊が軍帽として採用し、第二次世界大戦中にはイギリス軍の軍帽にカンゴールのベレーが採用され、中でも英雄と呼ばれた将軍、バーナード・モンゴメリーが愛用したことによってさらに広まりました。以降、アメリカのグリーンベレーをはじめ、世界各国の軍隊で採用されています。

フランスではピカソやロダンといった著名な芸術家が愛用し、日本でもパリに留学した芸術家の影響で、昭和初期から画家や文学者が好んで被っていた歴史があります。現代では、性別や年齢を問わず、幅広いファッションアイテムとして愛用されています。

Its current form emerged around the 15th-16th centuries, when the "biretta" worn by Catholic clergy was introduced to the Basque region near the French and Spanish border, spreading among farmers.

In the 19th century, it gained global popularity after Napoleon III referred to it as the "Basque Beret."

In the early 20th century, the French Alpine military adopted it as a cap, and during World War II, Kangol berets were adopted by the British army. Its popularity further spread when it was favored by the heroic General Bernard Montgomery. Since then, it has been adopted by armies worldwide, including the American Green Berets.

In France, renowned artists like Picasso and Rodin wore it, and in Japan, influenced by artists who studied in Paris, painters and literary figures favored it from the early Showa period. Today, it is a beloved fashion item for all genders and ages, offering a wide range of styles.
