It was simple and had no brim to prevent poor visibility, and was made of wool knit to prevent it from being blown away by strong winds in the frigid ocean. It also had a fold over it, which allowed it to act like a helmet to protect from objects hitting it, and it could also be folded down to protect the ears from the cold, so it is said that it began as a highly functional hat.

The origin of the word " WATCH CAP " is

The name is said to come from the knitted caps worn by watchmen on naval ships to keep warm .

The knit caps worn by the US Navy have different specifications for each era.

From around the 1980s, it was changed to four panels.
